Joint research and management forums

There are researchers who need data from the field, managers who want to share concerns in the same industry, and organizations that want to include the actual circumstances of companies in policy design. Korea Research Institute of Business & Branding's joint management research/forum is the basis for exchanging experience and knowledge.

Korea Research Institute of Business & Branding creates a foundation for companies, researchers, and educational institutions to share experience and knowledge. Key activities include joint research with companies, universities, and research institutes, surveys of business conditions by industry, roundtables between managers and practitioners, case studies and field exchanges for domestic and foreign companies, and forums to share research results and implementation experiences.

Joint research is also one of the pillars of operating resources. As multiple organizations work together, institute applies the same principles of clarifying the basis and managing the conditions of interest and confidentiality of data among participating organizations to joint research.

How do companies, universities, and research institutes conduct joint management research with Korea Research Institute of Business & Branding?

Joint research is about combining what each person has to answer questions that are difficult to answer alone. Companies provide field experience and data, universities and research institutes provide theories and analysis methods, and Korea Research Institute of Business & Branding provides experience connecting corporate sites and research. The basic flow of joint research is to determine the research question together, divide the roles and scope of data, and initially agree on how the results will be written and disclosed.

The institutional basis for industry-academia cooperation is the Act on the Promotion of Industrial Education and Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation, and for research and development conducted with government resources, the National Research, Development and Innovation Act sets the standards for planning, execution, and performance management. The Frascati Manual (OECD, 2015), an international guideline for defining and measuring research and development activities, can also be used as a reference when determining the scope of joint research.

Where is the business status survey by industry used?

Difficulties commonly experienced by companies in one industry are not easily visible within individual companies. The business status survey by industry collects the management conditions and tasks of companies in the same industry, allowing individual companies to compare their positions and public institutions to determine the direction of policies and support projects. Since expanding the survey on the management status of small and medium-sized businesses in 2009, the research institute has used the survey as an important basis for research on growth companies.

Manager·practitioners What is shared at the roundtable?

A round table is a place where managers or practitioners with similar concerns sit together and share experiences. Reports often discuss implementation difficulties, lessons learned from failures, and unanswered questions. Korea Research Institute of Business & Branding finds research questions in these conversations and shares the findings back with attendees. Since company stories brought up by attendees are treated as materials, the institute confidentiality principle applies.

How do on-site exchanges take place with cases of domestic and foreign companies?

When you see another company's site in person, you see things differently than when you read it in a document. Case studies and on-site exchanges with domestic and foreign companies are an opportunity for companies to see and learn from each other's operating methods and problem-solving processes up close. When sharing a case, institute explains the differences in industry, size, timing, and market environment, helping you interpret it to suit your own conditions rather than just copying the methods of the company you visited.

What is the management forum like to share research results and implementation experiences?

The forum is an opportunity to share research findings and implementation experiences with a wider audience. On the 20th anniversary of its establishment in June 2024, we held a planned study and forum on corporate growth and management changes. Research and implementation meet in one place, with management answering the analysis presented by the researcher with field experience and practitioners asking about the conditions for implementation.

How are data and interests handled in joint management research?

When multiple organizations participate, it becomes complicated to determine who provides the data, who can view it, and who releases the results and under what name. Korea Research Institute of Business & Branding applies the operating principles of clarifying the basis and managing the conditions of conflict of interest and data confidentiality to joint research. If there may be overlapping interests between participating organizations, this is disclosed at the outset and management methods are agreed. What should I prepare to participate in joint management research and exchange?

A good start is to write down a sentence or two of the question you want to address together. The clearer the question, the clearer the materials and roles that participating organizations can contribute. If you organize what data you need to answer that question, what your organization can add, and where you want to use the results, the design of the joint research will be faster. Round tables and forums are a lighter way of exchange than joint research.
